MM.xla : An Excel 4.0 Add-in Function to Calculate Molecular Mass
Even chemists and physisists often donīt understand the (high-level) concept and the (low-level) details of molecular mass, molecular weight in their nominal, exact, and average variants. Not even to mention the dimensions (gramm per mol, what is a mol, what is the meaning of a pure number resulting by dividing two values with identical dimensions).
Years of attempts to explain the concept and details to students (University of Heidelberg) and colleagues (Sandoz/Novartis Pharma) lead to that paper in the Journal of Chemical Education, 1996. It gives some clear defintions based upon original references, some examples, and explains an Excel-macro which allows to calculate those values in Microsoft Excel. I recieved some 50 requests for diskettes with the macros, and I have no idea wether or not it is still used anywhere.
